Even more natural lighting headshots

So Graham and I have been shooting a lot of headshots outside in wonderful natural light. Every time we do I think about something one of my photography teachers said. “You should throw away all your artificial light sources. A good photographer can make wonderful images with only the sun.” I still don’t agree completely with this idea, but there is something awesome about just using the sun as the only light source.

One of the secrets in shooting these types of photos is a basic concept in photography. Make sure the light is bright enough to expose the subject but also make sure the subject isn’t getting blinded my direct sunlight in their eyes. I know it seems like a no-brainer but it never hurts to remind yourself to check the subjects eyes.

I’ve also been doing shots with the sun directly behind the subject (image below). I love the 70′s photo esthetic and these types of shots remind me of that. It gives the images an awesome glow effect and creates great depth to the photo.

So we here at Portraits La have been wanted to step up our game as far as super cool photos so we decided we’ll be shooting more natural light shots. We’ll be doing these outside the studio until we can find a nice indoor studio with lots of natural light. Check out our new sample of the very pretty Crista Leopardi.headsoot

Portraits using a Ringflash

I shot this really great model named Lily the other day using my ABR800 Ringflash from AlienBees. I’ve always loved the effect the ringflash gives off. I used a strobe to hit the red background for a cool depth effect. I’m really happy with how the images turned out and can’t wait to shoot some headshots with this setup. I’ll be posting this images on the Portraits LA site soon but I wanted to let the blog world see them first.
